Matthew is one of the newer members of the Software Development team who joined us just under a year ago fresh out of a Software Engineering degree at the Jordanstown campus of University of Ulster.
Matthew is a local boy, having done his A–Levels at Antrim Grammar before working for a few years in the building trade. Thankfully for us he changed career direction and started his studies in the IT field, eventually coming to Nitec for his professional placement as part of his course.
Matthew is very keen on sports and can often be found debating the good and bad points of last night’s game in either rugby or football. Unfortunately, despite all his practical experience of football gleaned from regular playing, he shows a complete lack of knowledge by supporting Manchester United and holding out hope that Ole is the big saviour. Perhaps a kind Liverpool fan could fill him in on what happens after a period of dominance? In a perfect world, however, where Northern Ireland had enough snow and some decent mountains, Matthew would ditch the team sports for snowboarding.
Matthew does enjoy a little bit of TV and although he struggles to decide on his favourite movie, when forced he landed on either The Dark Knight or Alien. He does look into the future however and tell me that very soon Avengers Endgame will be the undisputed champion.
The sports theme continues into an ideal night in which would consist of a few mates, a few beers, lots of chicken wings and either football or rugby on the TV. I am not sure where his long–term girlfriend fits into these plans, however!
In his last year of university Matthew had the privilege of covering the topic of smart homes and the Internet of Things (IoT). He is generally fascinated with the idea of AI assistants controlling lights, heating and more in the home, and looks forward to this growing in the near future.
